Telecommunications services firm relocates to 22-acre site near Urbana
A large telecommunications service company based in Frederick County moved its corporate office in the last year from a building on Jefferson Pike to nearly 22 acres off I-270 near Urbana.
Decisive Communications Inc., which offers services such as broadband technical support, network design and fiber restoration to customers from Maine to Georgia, relocated its headquarters from 5305 Jefferson Pike to 21.77 acres of farmland at 9416 Doctor Perry Road in October.
The need for more office and field space prompted the telecommunications company to move, said Richard W. Sander Jr., executive vice president and chief financial officer.
“It was getting a little tight in Frederick,” Sander said, referring to the firm’s former headquarters on Jefferson Pike. “We’re a growing company, so this was very attractive to us.”
In the past several years, Decisive Communications has seen tremendous growth, Sander said. The company has doubled its revenue since 2012 and now employs about 300 people, 200 of whom work in the state.
Sander attributed part of the company’s growth to that of one of its clients, Comcast Cable. Other clients include Time Warner Cable, T-Mobile, AT&T and Walgreen Co.
The new space on Doctor Perry Road allows Decisive Communications to expand as needed, Sander said, adding that the firm is already contemplating plans to construct another building on the site.
The property has two buildings totaling 10,000 square feet, including a flex building with office space and a warehouse to store equipment. Today, about 40 employees work at the site, according to a news release.
Sander said another attractive aspect of the property to Decisive Communications founder and CEO Tim Harwood was the option to buy it after two years. The telecommunications firm is considering this possibility as likely, but no formal decision has been made, according to Sander.
Roche Enterprises LLC is listed as the owner of 9614 Doctor Perry Road. As of Jan. 1, the property was valued at nearly $1.3 million, according to the state Department of Assessments and Taxation.
Decisive Communications moved into the space after the prior tenant, LandCare, formerly known as TruGreen LandCare, left the space. The landscaping company is now at 5295 Westview Drive, according to the LandCare website.
A LandCare representative was not immediately available Wednesday to comment about the move.
The property originated as a dairy farm in the 1940s before it became a business space for a nursery and later LandCare and Decisive Communications, according to Sander.
After LandCare left the space, Sander said some minor remodeling was done to the buildings, roads and land before Decisive Communications moved in. The entire move cost about $15,000, Sander estimated.
A few employees remain at the telecommunications firm’s old headquarters on Jefferson Pike. But Sander said he expected they will move to the new location by the end of the year.
